Contemporary cream gallery kitchen with wood flooring. Go for a contemporary, urban look by opting for handleless cream gloss units - this sleek design is perfect for galley kitchens, such as those in Victorian properties. Add extra reflective surfaces with a coloured glass splashback and granite worktop. Built-in appliances fitted at eye level give the kitchen units a streamlined feel, while rich wood flooring adds warmth.
Other things to consider include leaving enough space next to the hob for setting down pans, allocating an area for serving up dishes, and making sure there is enough space in front of the oven for the door to open unhindered - a minimum of half a metre is a must.
A more open-plan version of the galley kitchen is to have a run of kitchen units along one wall with a kitchen island unit opposite. As with the L-shaped kitchen, the island unit can form a divide between the working kitchen space and the dining area or living area. If space allows, the non-work side of a kitchen island is a great place to include bar stool seating or open shelves to store cookery books.
If you’re going for an entirely black-and-white scheme, make one shade dominant rather than giving each equal prominence. A predominantly white scheme has fresh appeal, but don’t overlook the elegance of a dark scheme with hints of white. Alternatively stick to accessories for a softer finish. Monochrome works with all tones of timber, as well as greys and pure shades, such as emerald green.
